Save the Lighthouse!

From the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation:

New Basin Canal Lighthouse

As described on the American Lighthouse Foundation's web site (www.lighthousefoundation.org),
"the most endangered lighthouse in America at this very moment is the New Canal Lighthouse in Louisana. The one-two punch of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita has literally left this beautiful lighthouse "hanging on by a thread." New Canal Light needs immediate assistance to stabilize the structure before it collapses under its own weight due to the extensive damage inflicted upon it by the horrific wrath of the two recent hurricanes.

The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation was working through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act to obtain ownership of the historic structure when the storms wreaked unprecedented havoc on the Gulf region. Presently, the United States Coast Guard remains the owner of the lighthouse. Lighthouse leaders from around the country, led by Kathy Fleming of St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida, are working feverishly to find a solution to stabilize New Canal Lighthouse.

Urgent action is needed NOW! The lighthouse community must come together to voice their concern for this historic structure and help the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, St. Augustine Lighthouse and other lighthouse leaders around the country through federal advocacy before its too late. The situation is so dire that tomorrow could even be too late. The American Lighthouse Foundation strongly supports the effort to save New Canal Lighthouse and is committed to assisting the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and the national lighthouse community wherever possible.
