Over my sailing experiences, I have raced many Olympic and Gold cup course. They are great courses for a planing boat. It is true that the number of passing opportunities were slim unless some one fell off a plane. However, these courses do provide a lot of intense moments at the turning(gybe) mark. If I was in a planing hull I would not mind trying a Gold Cup course once in a while, but W/L definetly provide a more tactical course and present the opportunity for more passing. Reaching in displacement hulls is just a waterline race and somewhat boring. To me kind of like long distance racing. But hey that's just me and my opinion. Vipers, Megles 24s, 470s scows, and J70s would be fun on reaching legs. J35 Catalina's not so much. Handicap racing is not much fun reaching. Get a one design boat and solve most of the problems with sailing today.
