Fort Walton YC has some of the best folks around. Couple of issues. Summer weather has storms seriously interrupting racing 2 out of every 3 years. at this event The docking is not well protected and the non beachable boats get very beat up. Crew has to stay along side of boats during lightning storms to prevent serious damage. Between motor boat wakes and storm wind wakes the event is very tough on the Vipers. The hospitality is incredible. Food and bar are great. Pool was spectacular. In the second race their was a 45 degree shift that made the course a reach course in lieu of a race course. The RC did nothing to change the course as the mark set boat forgot to bring the change of course mark on the boat. They did not even attempt to change the course on the second beat. RC teams make mistake. No big deal. At least they got a race off with the 9:00am start. I blame the GYA for putting all of these events in the middle of summer with all the afternoon thunder squalls. If we want more juniors we need to sail in the 8 months of the year that have better weather. GYA is deaf and ignorant. Fort Walton is great. Sailing against 17 Vipers 10 times a year on the Gulf Coast in great weather would be an incredible experience for all ages. FWYC =GOOD GYA=Horrible, especially Capdeveille Schedule of so many summer events. GYA leadership will only have itself to blame if they do not change.
